What's In My Diaper Bag?
How to Pack the Perfect Diaper Bag
After trial and error, here's a list of what's in our diaper bag these days
Diapers
Duh! My son, Ryan, has zero tolerance for dirty diapers. There could be a single drop of pee in his diaper and he gets upset. That's a big reason why we made the switch to cloth diapers at home. But, when we're out and about, we use disposables for ease. We don't like to be caught without diapers, so I suggest using about 5-7 diapers, or really, as many as your bag can hold. They're thin and light-weight, so why wouldn't you? I'm a fan of the Amazon Brand diapers - Mama Bear and this item offers Subscribe and Save 5%. And with diapers, comes rashes. To help treat them away from home, grab a small bottle of Burt's Bees Diaper Rash Cream.
Wipes
Again, duh! Wipes are definitely another thing you don't want to run low on in your bag. I sound like a broken record, but when you can save 5% by using Amazon's Subscribe and Save 5% on wipes too...I mean, do you like money? Because I like to save money wherever I can. Needless to say, we still subscribe to Amazon Elements Baby Wipes because I didn't want to mess around with having to make and deal with cloth wipes. I suggest getting a travel case for wipes too. The packs you order usually have a lot of wipes in them, and that was too bulky for our diaper bag. And the travel packs were so expensive, I just got a Reusable Wet Wipe Pouch and stuffed it with whatever wipes I wanted. After you're done with a diaper change, but aren't able to wash your hands right away, a travel-size Hand Sanitizer comes in...handy
Change of Clothes
This goes for both little one and parents. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to walk around finishing up grocery shopping covered in who knows what. I also have a clean onesie rolled up in his wet/dry.
Portable Diaper Changing Pad
You won't always have a clean surface available to change your baby, so I like to have this Portable Diaper Changing Pad. This is where I stuff a few diapers and put the reusable wet wipe pouch and roll it all up. Better than being that dad who had to change his baby on a blanket on the bathroom floor.
Pacifier/Teether
Depending on what your child prefers and if they are teething or not, I always like to have a pacifier. My son is picky about pacifiers, but is ok with the Philips AVENT Soothie Pacifiers. We have 10 others at home, but he always prefers this brand.
Ryan isn't teething yet, but I'm sure it's around the corner because this kid can slobber! I've read raving reviews about the Vulli Sophie Giraffe Teether, so once he does start teething you can be sure I'll have this in our bag.
First Aid Kit
Some people have a First Aid Kit in their cars, but what if you're not in your car? What if your car is parked a mile away? So this compact travel First Aid Kit by Johnson & Johnson will fit nicely in whatever style bag you choose. Be prepared!
Muslin Blankets
We have a ton of these aden + anais Baby Blankets around the house and always bring a clean one with us when we leave. They're soft, durable and versatile. We could use them as actual swaddle blankets for maybe one day before Ryan was strong enough to wiggle himself out of them. But they're great to lay him on top of for a nap, wipe his drooly mouth, or cover his car seat from the sun.
Bottles/Food Containers
We use Joovy Boob Baby Bottles for both home and travel. We've tried other brands, but this is the style and brand Ryan prefers. If you are like us and occasionally use formula, I wanted a way to transport things a little easier. Before we leave the house, we put a measured amount of formula in one of these Philips AVENT Storage Cups, and then the appropriate amount of bottled water in his bottle. When he's hungry, we mix the two, and don't have to worry about it spoiling. This also eliminates the need for ice packs and/or a bottle warmer.
Now, if you're traveling with breast milk, you'll need a different strategy. We have this Insulated Tote that comes with an ice pack! Ryan does not like cold milk out of the fridge, so when we travel we use this Tommee Tippee Travel Bottle and Food Warmer. You just fill the insulated container with hot water, then use that water to warm whatever you're feeding your child. This would work great for when they transition to baby food that's kept cold too!
Wet/Dry Bag
If you decide to go with cloth diapers, you should really think about having a Wet/Dry Bag. Or even for soiled clothes. Thankfully Ryan has not had any blowouts all over his clothes while we've been away from home, but if he did, I'd throw his clothes in this bag and wash them when we returned home.
Things for Mommy/Daddy
My diaper bag has become my purse in that anything I need for heading out the door is also in that bag. Here are some things I never leave the house without.
Planner to schedule appointments/write down tasks, Phone Charger because you never want to be caught with a dead battery, Purse Insert that way my stuff is easily accessible and easy to remove if I don't need the entire diaper bag, Water Bottle, it's important to stay hydrated, especially if you are breastfeeding
